Side by Side: Sweetened Lime Juices

In a recent trip to my local grocery store I was pleasantly surprised to find something OTHER than the basic Rose’s Lime Juice in the mixers isle. All thoughts stopped as I was drawn to find not only a natural sweetened lime juice but also a “real” grenadine as well. I decided it would be worth a side by side tasting and comparison of the basic standard of Rose’s with this new item on the shelf by “Powell & Mahoney.” I’ve based this review off of 5 main criteria: Recipe/Ingredients, Color, Aroma, Taste, and Overall.

To begin Rose’s Sweetened Lime Juice is based on Corn Syrup as it’s main sweetener and is colored artificially to give a strange green chartreuse color. The P&M’s color however is a refreshing amber color that already seems better by comparison. It’s ingredients are also 100% natural so instead of corn syrup, food coloring, and concentrated lime juice as the core components, you’re looking at filtered water, and cane sugar in addition to the same lime juice concentrate.

Rose’s Lime has a sweet and limey aroma that lends itself to something of a lime peel. The P&M lime juice smells less sweet and a bit more like apple juice (which is strange as it doesn’t contain any).

The taste of the Rose’s Lime should be familar to any mixologist. It’s very sour with some sweet undertones as the juice crosses your palette and settles down. The Powell & Mahoney Clarified Lime Juice however, has a far superior taste in my opinion. It’s less sour and has a wonderfully juicy taste like you just bit into a sugared lime wedge.

So between the two of them I’ll highly recommend some Powell & Mahoney Clarified Lime Juice (over Rose’s) for most drinks. While Rose’s is a nice color component and heavy on the sour which could be great for a modern cocktail, the P&M gives a classic taste to any drink. I imagine it would go great in a Gin or Rum based drink especially a Gimlet or a Daiquiri Variation. If you have some in your area, I recommend picking some up!

Blue Tropical Waters

Well I’m back from a long hiatus here on the blog and I’ve got with me a brand new MoM original. Today we’ve got the “Blue Tropical Waters” inspired by a recent switch from 99 Bananas to a more traditional banana liqueur. A wonderfully colored drink with a crisp blue jewel color makes for an inviting cocktail creation. The drink has a clean orange and banana aroma to start you off. On first taste you get a clean and sweet coconut flavor, mid-pallet you’re greeted with some refreshing lime, and it ends with a banana and coconut balance that invites you back for more. I pretty much created this one on the fly, and am impressed with how well the flavors balanced each other out, as well as the 3 distinct flavor profiles. Give this one a try for yourself

Gold Rush

This week we’ve got a fantastic gold colored drink with a nice kick. I don’t do much with tequila, but this really hits the spot. It’s a nice balance of alcohol burn and a pinch of sweet. If you’re looking for something with tequila this is certainly worth a try. The drink’s jewel gold color makes for an inviting start in addition to the strong agave aroma. The drink starts sweet, moves quickly to the strong taste of Grand Marnier, then finishes with the familiar taste of Tequila. Overall this drink is a solid 7.5/10, it’s not perfect, but if tequila is your choice spirit, this could easily be an 8.5 for you. On the alcohol taste scale though you’re also looking at about a 7.5/10… this drink certainly has some kick!

Gold Rush

1 1/2 oz Gold Tequila
1/2 oz Grand Marnier
1/2 oz Rose’s Lime Juice
Lime Wedge

Stir and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Squeeze lime wedge over the top and drop it in. (Note: I didn’t have a lime wedge at the time of making it, but I used a few drops of lime juice to compensate)

Vampire Cocktail

Well it still might be a little early for some (myself included) to be thinking about Halloween themed drinks, so this one will work for both the holiday and all the annoying Twilight fans out there that also drink (which is probably a very small area on a venn diagram).

The drink is simple enough. Berry aromas to start, with a sweet start and a slightly sour finish with a mild bite (no pun intended). It’s a good themed drink, but it’s lacking in a lot of complexity so there’s not much to talk about. It tastes a bit like each of the constituent parts. Perhaps a drop or two of grenadine after shaking could add a little more flair to the drink, if it doesn’t get lost in the rest of the “red.”

Tropical Dream

Today we’ve got one hell of a great blending cocktail! With a few minor substitutions to the “Bacardi Tropical Dream,” you’ll find this or a variation of your own to really impress your friends. While the original recipe calls for Orange Rum and Bacardi Gold, I feel my replacement of Cruzan Aged and Parrot Bay Pineapple certainly didn’t hurt the outcome. In fact it may have made it better.

If blended well you’ll start with the icy sweet and tropical flavors of orange juice and your flavored rum. Then on your mid palette you get that flavored rum with the gold embodied in the bits of ice. Finally you get a mild sour from the underlying sweet/sour mix to really bring this drink home. I do wish there was another juice component in the  though as I found myself wanting a little more body in the drink. Although this could easily be solved with a little less ice.

Bottom line, this is a great tropical drink for any occasion, and with a big enough blender it could be a great party highlighter.

Surf Sider

Today’s cocktail is a very interesting mix with some dark rum (then again it may depend on your choice rum). It’s dark sea foam green color adds intrigue and mystery as a start. It has a pleasant pineapple aroma and the lime garnish makes for a rather inviting mystery. It starts light and sweet, moves quickly to a citrus mix, then to a stiff spiced rum finish. It’s pretty good overall, but it is equally mysterious in taste and looks.

American Graffiti

Do you live dangerously? Well you might want to start, by downing this powerful cocktail. The American Graffiti is a summery tropical drink with a lot of flavor without a harsh punch (taste wise). The main aroma builds from pineapple and sweet/sour and its bright red color is reminiscent of the Red Demon cocktail. The drink starts off very smooth and then hits the back of your palette with a mild and full bodied rum. Considering the amount of alcohol present, I am surprised it doesn’t have more of a harsh kick. I imagine this is thanks to the mix of sloe gin and roses lime to build a fruity citrus into the mix.

My only concern with the original recipie is that it calls for both “light rum” and “rum.” Because the first rum is specifically light, but the second is unspecified, I decided Bacardi Gold would be a nice balanced choice. I do wonder how Some Captain Original Spiced would change this drink. Even a flavored rum would be a good choice (something like mango or coconut). Either way though it’s a very solid drink with a great open end for variations.

Vodka Grand

Today’s late night cocktail is a mildly aromatic and powerful drink. The Vodka Grand is bold both in appearance and taste. Strong and mildly sour you get a semi-sweet citrus start, then to a mid-range Grand Marnier on your main palette, finalized by the familiar sting of vodka. This drink is certainly a slow sipper, with a flavorful bite. Don’t take it lightly, but instead enjoy it’s tasty elegance.

Cold Fusion

Today I’m highlighting one of my current favorites. The “Cold Fusion” is a delightful sweet, sour, and melon flavored drink with a great all around taste and feel. Built on the core lemon and Midori base, it’s aroma and taste are equally of both ingredients. The drink starts sweet and goes to a mild sour as it hits the back of your mouth. Midori takes center stage, but thanks to the sweet/sour and lemon it doesn’t overpower the drink. The colorful green makes this somewhere between a late spring and early summer drink, and certainly warrants a place on my permanent menu.

Also be sure to stay tuned for this months special Valentine’s Day episode of the show coming this Wednesday (yeah it’s a week late, but I wanted it to line up with the holiday better). For that episode I’ll be making a drink called the Dream of Love, with a post to follow.
