Mint Condition

It’s the first day of Fall and we’re rolling in the season with an interesting bourbon drink. Now I’m not one for coffee in general, but I will tolerate Kahlua on the occasion, and this makes an interesting use of the liqueur. The oaky taste of bourbon and Kahlua begins this drink and it ends on a refreshing peppermint blast. Presentation is pretty simple, and its  slight mint and earthy bourbon aromas. If you have the ingredients it might be worth a try, but personally I’ll be ranking this one lower as coffee doesn’t sit well on my palette.

Mint Condition

3/4 oz Bourbon
3/4 oz Vodka
3/4 oz Peppermint Schnapps
1/2 oz Kahlua

Shake with ice and strain into a chilled sour glass.

Southern Belle (Mocktail)

With so many heavy hitting drinks on the blog here, I decided it was about time to post a drink that someone of any age can enjoy. The “Southern Belle” is a refreshing minty drink right in time for a warm spring. The fresh mint builds an aromatic start with a traditional taste of ginger ale. As it reaches the back of your taste palette you’ll get more of the sweet mint flavor (especially if you grab a mint leaf as you sip).

This is a great one for all ages, and perfect for sitting in the afternoon sun.

Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster (Geek and Sundry Version)

Don’t Panic!

This week I’m featuring an additional drink as I forgot to post last Monday.
Recently I tried Mitch Hutt’s version of the “Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster” from his recent Geek and Sundry Vlog.

The drink is a unique sea foam green color with a citrus and gin aroma. The cocktail starts sweet and goes quickly to sour. Then you get a moderate gin flavor and it finishes with a tart bourbon taste.

At least this variation won’t kill you…

John Wayne Cocktail

The John Wayne is a very interesting drink in that it doesn’t really embody the the essence of rugged or western. Instead the drink has a more bitter citrus aroma and more southern presentation. If anything it as a bit of a sandy color thanks to the hues of the ingredients. The drink calls for Angostura Bitters, so to compliment the drink I chose the orange bitters version. The cocktail starts out with a pleasant bitter citrus (standard aromatics might give a slightly different flavor) and ends with a full bourbon flavor. It’s a good slow sipper drink, but I do feel it might be more well rounded with a little extra OJ.
