Let’s get one last cocktail recipe in before Lent shall we? I’ll be taking these 40 days before Easter to sober up and give my liver a break, but for today it’s party time! For today’s cocktail I’m finally ready to share the third cocktail in the Avatar Universe drink set. The “Fire Nation Flaming Rum Punch” is a kick in the gut in it’s intense volume of alcohol, but a wonderfully balanced mix of flavors similar to that of a classic Zombie.
The Flaming Rum Punch is a spectacle of color and real fire! If done correctly you’ll be able to ignite the cocktail and for your guests turn cinnamon into sparks with your fingertips. When the fire is out and the glass’ rim has cooled you’re greeted with a toasty cinnamon aroma and an inviting red-orange color. The first quarter of the drink is super intense as you sip off the layer of 151 rum, which hits hard but with a toasted cinnamon flavor with a simple fruity mix underneath. After you’ve gotten through initial shock layer, you’re left with a complex rum punch recipe. The drink starts sweet, moves to a smokey cinnamon on the mid palette with a little falernum and citrus creeping at the back end, and finishes with a “PUNCH” of rum on the back end with a sweet fruit tail as it sits.
Much like it’s predecessors in the series, this cocktail isn’t to be taken lightly. It kicks you from front to back, but is sweet enough to not be overpowering. Overall it’s a fun drink to pull out for a party, but not something I’d make everyday. If you’re got a well stocked bar, you might want to give it a try.
3/4 oz Sloe Gin
1/4 oz Grenadine
1/2 oz Falernum (or 1/4 Orgeat, 1/4 Lime Juice, pinch of clove, pinch of ginger) 3 oz Orange Juice 1/2 oz Sweet/Sour 1 oz Spiced Rum 1/2 oz Gold Rum 1 oz Dark Rum 3/4 oz 151 Rum
Shake everything except 151 with ice. Strain into a highball or pint glass (no ice). Float 151 rum over the drink. Ignite. Sprinkle powdered cinnamon over as desired. Blow out flame and enjoy.
I want to start by saying that “Fire Water” Liqueur is one of the single worst buys I have ever made. It tastes like liquid atomic fireballs wrapped in big red gum. I’ve had it pretty much since I started drinking and it’s not even 1/4 gone yet. That said, this is one of the VERY few uses of it that I found actually palatable, and very surprisingly so.
So, I knew I wanted to post a new drink to the blog, but I had NO IDEA that this would be it. This was the most surprising drink recipe I’ve had to date. I was fulling expecting a negative drink review for this one, but honestly after trying it I’m shocked!
A subtle orange color is all you really have to start with. No garnishes or anything to make it more inviting. The drink smells mildly of bourbon and cinnamon and not much else. You’re greeted with the sweetness of the orange juice, followed by a mellow rum, and then it finishes with a cinnamon burn, but not as harsh as pure Fire Water. This cocktail really took me off guard in that respect. Most of the time whatever Fire Water touches in less than a dash turns into cinnamon candy insanity that is flat out difficult to drink either in sips or all at once. This however is not only half decent, but it’s something that I might actually make again.
Perhaps if you’re looking for a “classier” (if you can call it that) version of this, you may want to use a cinnamon whiskey or some Aftershock for a more pleasant taste. However at that point I think you might miss the name of the drink being “hell.”
Well this is one of those cocktails that can be described as “everything but the kitchen sink.” The drink actually doesn’t have much of an aroma which starts off very deceiving. The drink starts off like snow cone…sweet and icy, you’re then greeting by the wonderful mixing of rums, and you’re left with a complex mixing of juices, and liqueurs. The Grand Marnier and Amaretto are very subtle in this drink, but they are there. If you weren’t told about them you might just say “oh that tastes like spiced rum,” but when you recognize the flavors in the drinks aftertaste you’ll want to go back for more!

1 1/4 oz Gold Rum
1 oz Spiced Rum
3/4 oz Amaretto
3/4 oz Grand Marnier 1/2 oz Cranberry Juice
1/2 oz Orange Juice
1/2 oz Grenadine
1/2 oz Sweet/Sour
1 oz Coconut Cream Syrup
1 oz Pineapple Juice
Blend all ingredients with ice. Pour into a large pint, or 3-4 short glasses.
Well this is certainly an interesting drink for my return from another blog hiatus. The “Flaming Blue Blaster” starts out by breaking a simple rule of mixology: “Don’t shake drinks that are alcohol only. Stir them.” NOPE we’re shaking this drink for some weird reason.
An interesting blue-green color starts you off questioning what is even in this drink (besides curacao). You’re greeting with a pleasant peppermint aroma, with a subtle note of oaky bourbon. The drink starts out sweet and tangy thanks to the curacao, it moves to an oaky alcohol taste in the middle (thanks to the Oakheart Rum, and if finishes in two segments; first a bourbon taste then a refreshing mint. I think my use of both the 100 proof bourbon and 100 proof schnapps for this drink fit the name quite well. For a less intense variation you could easily move to a more moderately proofed variation of either. Even with the intense flavor and proof components it’s still a very good drink and not too overpowering. I’d recommend giving this one a try for a slow sipper style cocktail.
Today’s drink is one of many drink variations, this one I actually didn’t even know I made before. Actually it was a blue tidal wave, this however is more of a brownish rum drink.
This version has a simple appearance which could be improved with a lemon wedge to bring some life into the drink. It has bits of citrus and rum aromas and tastes as well. It starts light with a sweet cranberry flavor. Mid palette you’ll get a sweet and sour rum taste, followed up by a tart spiced rum burn. It’s a decent drink, but certainly isn’t one of my favorites. It could be improved a bit with some bitters.
Tidal Wave (2)
1/2 oz Vodka 1/2 oz Gold Rum 1/2 oz Spiced Rum 1/2 oz Cranberry Juice 1/2 oz Sweet and Sour
Well with a recent restock of my Captain Morgan Original, I was lovingly greeted with a little ad/recipe book on the bottle. While most company designed drinks are iffy at best today’s actually has a nice balance of flavors. A mild citrus aroma paired with some subtle almond undertones makes this a very inviting drink. Granted my substitution of Blue Curacao for the orange variety might make this visually appeal a little strange, but with the right garnish it does come back around. Really the only difference between orange and blue curacao is the color, so it doesn’t change the flavor profiles of the drink with this substitution.
Starting with a smooth juicy flavor it slowly moves to a spiced rum and mild almond finish. It may not be a drink for the menu, but it certainly warrants keeping the little card around to make it again.

Captain Morgan Ⓡ Citrus Squeeze Punch
1.5 oz Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum
1 tbsp Orange Curacao (Blue used) 2 oz OJ 1 tbsp Lemon Juice 1/2 oz Almond Syrup
Straight build in a rocks glass over ice. Stir well. Garnish with your choice of sliced or peeled citrus fruit (orange, lemon, and/or mint spring)
I am super excited to share today’s drink of the week as it has easily become one of my new summer favorites! The drink’s sweet pineapple aroma and a (tequila) sunrise style appearance makes for an inviting cocktial. It starts sweet, moves to a bit of spiced rum taste, then to coconut on the finish. Near the end of the drink you start getting a sweeter raspberry finish which rounds everything out making for almost 2 drinks in one. This one may be a little too sweet for some of you so it doesn’t quite make it perfect, but it’s damn close.

Leaning Tower Cocktail
1 oz Captain Original Spiced Rum
1 oz Banana Liqueur
1 oz Coconut Syrup
2 oz OJ
2 oz Pineapple Juice
3/4 oz Raspberry Liqueur
Orange Slice and Cherry
Shake all except raspberry liqueur with ice. Strain into an iced highball glass (or pint). Pour raspberry liqueur on top (should slowly sink to bottom). Garnish with an orange slice and cherry.

“The Liquid Autumn”
2 Parts Peach Schnapps
1 Part Spiced Rum
The shot in layered form has a the initial taste of spiced rum with a sweet aftertaste or the peach. If you’re looking for an even sweeter finish add a dash of grenadine, then layer on the Peach Schnapps and Spiced Rum (in that order, as higher proof ingredients are “lighter” in density).

Well I did promise you a drink of the week which this week is an original, but still in progress creation that I’m calling the “Harvest Pumpkin.” The tastes aren’t quite perfect yet, but it is still very close and certainly drinkable. Try it out for yourself if you can find a nice pumpkin liqueur.
